Thank you for your interest in participating in the Rehabilitation Neuroscience Laboratory's research!

Our goal is to further understand brain functioning and its relationship to human behavior. We strive to conduct scientifically sound studies that provide us information about real-world functioning. We recognize the importance of examining patterns within patient groups as this can inform diagnosis or treatment of specific conditions, while also respecting individual differences. We strive to conduct studies that will make a difference in people’s lives by improving patient care. This is accomplished using interdisciplinary teams of researchers and clinicians.

Please see the brochure on the right of this page for more information about participating in our research, or continue to read below.

Amputee Participants

Individuals who have lost, or been born without one or more upper or lower limbs are sought for participation in a research database at the University of Missouri.

The Rehabilitation Neuroscience Laboratory studies the effects of limb loss or absence, with the goal of improving rehabilitation techniques. This database will allow us to contact you when we have a specific study for which you may be eligible. At that point we will provide you with the details of the study, and you will be able to choose whether or not you wish to volunteer.

Participants must older than 18 years of age, in good health with no history of neurological or psychiatric illness.

Please contact Dr. Scott Frey to inquire about compensation for your time and reimbursement for travel expenses for participation in future studies, via email:, or by phone: 573-882-4572.

Control Participants

Control subjects play a vital role in research. Control subjects are individuals who are used as comparisons to subjects who have certain medical conditions, including stroke and limb loss. Control subjects are selected for invitation to participate in studies based on characteristics such as age and gender. Enrolling in our control subject database will allow us to contact you when there is a study for which you may be eligible. You may agree or decline to participate in any study for which you are invited. If you decline to participate in a specific study, we will still keep your name in the database to notify you of future studies. You may withdraw from the database at any time.

If you are interested or have any questions, please contact Dr. Scott Frey, via email: or by phone: (573) 882-4572.

What can I expect?

Requirements for each study will be different. A full explanation of the study will be provided when you are invited, so that you can decide whether or not you wish to participate. Some individuals in the database may never be contacted. You can agree to participate in some studies and decline to participate in others. You may receive payment if you participate in a study; contact the laboratory to inquire about details.

To join the database:

  • you must be 18 or older
  • healthy
  • English-speaking
  • have no history of neurological disease or injury.
